What is Tautology?

Read the following sentences: "They came in order one by one.", "They repeated it again and again", "He is my cousin brother.", "Shall we proceed further?", "I will revert back soon.". You see that each of these sentences has the repetition of an idea. We can simply say: "They came in order., "They repeated it", "He is my cousin brother.", "Shall we proceed ?", "I will revert soon.  Tautology is a phrase or a sentence that says the same thing twice. It is needless repetition of an idea. Sometimes, tautology can be used in literature to emphasize an idea. But it is a faulty style of writing, as it adds unnecessary words.

Introduce Yourself, A common question during Interview

"Introduce yourself." or "Tell me/us something about yourself." is usually the first question that interviewers ask a candidate. Although it looks to be a simple nondirective question, a candidate can use this question to showcase his/ her major skills and can direct the flow of the interview the way he/ she wants.  In the beginning of an interview, some interviewers need some time to browse though a candidate's resume to understand his/ her profile so that they can ask some related questions further. So, in order to keep the candidate busy, they ask this question. They are well-aware of the answer that the candidate is going to give. Therefore, they ask this question casually. On the other hand, some interviewers want to get information from a candidate only. They prefer to talk to the candidate rather than going through his/ her resume. They also want the candidate to feel at ease. So, they start with an easy question. Whatever is the intention of interviewe...

What is a rhetorical question?

"Has anyone seen God?", "Can anyone fight with a lion?', "Is anyone mortal?", "Do you ever care for me?", "Have I ever troubled you?". Look at the above-given sentences which look like questions. But, are they questions, or they are answers? These are implied answers. When you use these sentences, you actually mean to say: "No one has seen God.", "No one can fight with a lion.", "No one is mortal.", "You do not care for me.", and "I have never troubled you.". Such questions are called rhetorical questions. A rhetorical question is a question that is asked in order to create a dramatic effect rather than to get an answer. Most of us use it in our daily conversations to convey our thought in a dramatic style. It is also an effective tool for writers to grab readers' attention.  It is good to be assertive. But, at times, you should use rhetorical questions. Buddham encourages you to im...

How To Listen Effectively

Among all the four activities of communication; listening, speaking, reading & writing, listening is the one that we do more than other activities. We listen or hear for most of the time duration we are awake. Our ears rest only when we are in a sleeping state. There is a difference between listening and hearing. Hearing is just receiving the sound. We hear some noise, we hear sounds of thud, splash, blast, etc. Listening, on the other hand, is a serious activity. It needs our attention. When we listen to sounds, we understand the meaning, and we react. To be a good listener and to make others listen, it is important to classify the listeners. There are four types of listeners: active listeners, passive listeners, evaluative listeners & non-listeners. It is very interesting to know about these listeners. Active listeners are those who are very attentive and they listen to the whole conversation and grab everything. Passive listeners are those who listen to some part of the...

How To Improve Speaking Skill

There are many who struggle to speak English. When they are in a situation where they need to interact with others in English, they feel a lot of hesitation. Some people spend a lot of time learning grammar with the hope that it will enable them to speak in English. There are others who are good at grammar and also good at writing skills, but when it comes to speaking, they find it difficult. Again, there are some individuals who have an opinion that learning a good number of words will work for them, and they will start speaking one day. But, to no avail. Learning vocabulary and grammar does benefit learners, but the thing which is most important for learning to speak is practice. One needs to speak in order to learn to speak. A cricketer can learn to play cricket only by playing. A cook can learn cooking only by cooking. Theoretical knowledge does not help us much in learning or developing a skill. So, if anyone is interested to improve his or her speaking skill, he or she needs...

Before we discuss which is the better method of learning the usage, let us understand what we all need to learn about a particular word. Apart from the meaning of a word, we need to understand its parts of speech, its connotation, its phrasal use, and its collocation with the other word.  Every word has a role to play in a sentence.
