There are many who struggle to speak English. When they are in a situation where they need to interact with others in English, they feel a lot of hesitation. Some people spend a lot of time learning grammar with the hope that it will enable them to speak in English. There are others who are good at grammar and also good at writing skills, but when it comes to speaking, they find it difficult. Again, there are some individuals who have an opinion that learning a good number of words will work for them, and they will start speaking one day. But, to no avail.
Learning vocabulary and grammar does benefit learners, but the thing which is most important for learning to speak is practice. One needs to speak in order to learn to speak. A cricketer can learn to play cricket only by playing. A cook can learn cooking only by cooking. Theoretical knowledge does not help us much in learning or developing a skill. So, if anyone is interested to improve his or her speaking skill, he or she needs an environment where he or she can interact with others. Practice is the key to success.
There are basically three problems that one faces while speaking: The first one is the lack of ideas, the second is the approach, and the third is the lack of confidence. And all the three problems can be sorted out only by practicing. Let us see how practice can help combat all three challenges.
The lack of ideas is the problem that everyone faces. Even those individuals who can speak excellent English face this problem. If a person does not have an idea of what 'Brain drain' is, he or she will not be able to speak even a single sentence about 'Brain drain', even if he or she is an eloquent English speaker. So, when one has no idea, one should get an idea. One should read a lot to have ideas of diverse fields.
The next one is the approach. Many times, people have ideas, but they do not know how to express them. We know what corruption is, but when we are asked to define the word 'corruption', we may face difficulty. But, if we do regular practice, we may define corruption as 'misallocation of public funds, non-recovery of taxes or any other misconduct such as bribery or any unethical behaviour'. So, instead of thinking too much, we should start practicing.
The third problem i.e. the lack of confidence is the real challenge. To gain confidence, one must keep interacting with others without worrying about the mistakes one makes. All people have learnt their mother tongue gradually. They may have made mistakes initially. But over a period of time, they have gained confidence. Likewise, speaking English is also gradual learning.
So, get an environment, have friends who are ready to interact with you. If you do not get these two, join the training programme offered by Buddham to improve your communication skill.
And Talk To The World The Way They Want You To.
Wish You All The Best!!
