Phrasal Verbs

A phrasal verb usually consists of a verb and an adverb. 

The following adverbs are used in phrasal verbs:

up, down, in, out, about, off, away, back, by, on, over, past, round, through etc.

Examples:

Break out: sudden outburst of unpleasant situation

We were walking in the garden, when the storm broke out.

Blow over: end (of a bad situation) without any serious consequences

We should not worry, the bad time will blow over.


Phrasal verbs can be of two or three words:

(i) Verb + Adverb         

     Put             on                    

     Look         back                

     Do            up  

                   

(ii) Verb + Adverb + Preposition

    Put        up            with

    Look     down        upon

    Do      away        with
